Dragon’s Eye Recordings is pleased to announce SEMI LATTICE, the latest reissue from Tokyo-based sound artist and composer Yui Onodera. SEMI LATTICE was originally released in 2015 on Baskaru (FR) to critical acclaim, and drew comparisons to Chihei Hatakeyama, Ken Ikeda, Sawako, and Celer. On SEMI LATTICE, Onodera blends delicate instrumental lines with field recordings and computer processing to create dreamy and melancholic networks of sounds.

SEMI LATTICE draws inspiration—and its title—from the urban structural theory of architect Christopher Alexander. His theory distinguishes ancient (natural) cities and modern (planned) ones by their structures. The natural city is akin to a "semilattice," a complex system with many interconnected parts. In contrast, the planned city follows a graph-theoretical "tree" structure, which is less complex because its parts are organized into a single hierarchy. Onodera realizes this by drawing complex materials from modest sources such as piano, guitars, and field recordings, seamlessly processing them to yield deceptively simple yet sophisticated outcomes. Upon initial listen, one could mistake SEMI LATTICE for tranquil background music; however, for those willing to listen deeply, a profound and immersive journey unfolds before them.
